A natural alternative to laundry and cleaning products that is gentle on fabrics and surfaces, cost-effective, hypo-allergenic, antibacterial, antifungal and produced with almost no processing. Also known as Soapberries, these are the dried fruit shell of the Sapindus Mukorossi tree that grows wild in the Himalayas. When wet, they produce a saponin gel which can be used just like soap for washing and cleaning. Suitable for front and top loaders or handwashing at all temperatures.

How to use

Place 4 to 6 soap nuts into a small cotton bag (such as the Soap Nuts Wash Bag available through Wasteless Pantry) or an odd sock that can be tied at the end. Add bag to normal washload and remove when finished. This can be repeated 3 to 6 times (depending on soiling, water temperature and hardness of water) before the used soap nuts are then composted.

Add a few drops of essential oil on the washbag if you prefer scented laundry.

MULTIPURPOSE CLEANER/HANDWASHING SOLUTION boil a handful of soap nuts in 500ml water for 10 to 15 minutes, cool and strain before using.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
